Walk the last 100km of the Portuguese Coastal Way!
While the French Way from Sarria to Santiago is the most popular Camino route, the recently introduced Portuguese Coastal Way has quickly become the second most popular option due to its stunning coastal scenery.
As with our French Way tours, we provide all our Portuguese Coastal Way walkers with a pilgrim passport to be stamped at churches, hotels and cafes along the route, and on arrival in Santiago, you can present your passport at the pilgrim office to obtain your Camino certificate!
Our itinerary sees you spend 4 nights in the town of Vigo and 3 nights in Santiago. We will transfer you to and from the walk each morning and afternoon. This means you don’t need to pack your bags and check-out each morning before walking which adds a little more comfort to your Camino. Our guide’s expertise will also help to ensure you have a valuable and enriching experience whilst walking the Camino.

Day 1: Saturday 10th October 2020
Make your way to Dublin airport for your flight to Santiago de Compostela. After your arrival in Santiago Airport, you will be transferred to your Vigo Hotel. Vigo has a massive fishing port as well as ancient Roman ruins, neoclassical churches, and an authentic Galician old town, so it’s wonderful locations to stay for a few nights.

Day 2: Sunday 11th October 2020
Your camino starts with a transfer at 08:30 from your Vigo Hotel to the 100km marker near Oia. The group will visit a nearby cafe or church to get your first camino stamps, before taking a couple of pictures at the marker and beginning the walk. The walk starts with a slight incline up through tree lined paths, and as the route climbs, you will have stunning views out to your left over Vigo bay. You will then pass by the southern outskirts of Vigo before continuing to the hamlet of Cabanas (approx 21km/6hr). From there, you will be picked up at around 17:00 for a transfer back to your Vigo Hotel.

Day 3: Monday 12th October 2020
This morning you will return to Cabanas to begin walking in the direction of Redondela. Beginning on a hillside you will again have beautiful views over the bay before you drop down into the quaint town of Redondela. The town has a statue of Jules Verne created to thank him for devoting a chapter of his book 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, to "The Bay of Vigo". It’s also the point where the Coastal Way meets the more traditional, inland, Portuguese Way, and is a great spot to stop for a morning coffee. You will then continue along the coast to Arcade, a beautiful fishing village, and a good place to stop for lunch before heading into the last few kilometres of the day. Todays finishing point is a small church in the hamlet of Bertola called Capilla de Santa Marta (approx 23km/6.5hr). For here you will be transferred at 17:00 from Bertola to Vigo Hotel.

Day 4: Tuesday 13th October 2020
Today the morning transfer will take you to Bertola to walk from there. After 5km you’ll reach the town of Pontevedra where you can stop for a morning break and maybe choose to take a quick look at its many Romanesque churches and granite squares. After Pontevedra, you’ll notice a change in the scenery as the route moves away from the coast and begins to pass through pine forests. You will pass by the village of Alba where you can pick up a stamp in the church of Santa Maria de Alba. And in Portela, you can do the same in the church of San Mamede. After Portela, if time allows, there may be the possibility of a 750 metre detour to visit the waterfalls in the Parque Natural Ría Barosa. You’ll finish up today in Caldas de Reis, a town famous for it’s hot springs, and from thereyou will be taken back to your hotel in Vigo for your last night at this hotel. (approx 26km/7hrs).

Day 5: Wednesday 14th October 2020
You will check-out from your hotel in Vigo today, so do not forget to take your suitcase with you to the bus transfer before boarding on the bus that will take you this morning to Caldas de Reis and walk a distance of around 18km to Padron. This will be a shorter day that the previous 3 and passes through a number of villages, as well as near to many others, giving you ample opportunities to take breaks in cafes along the way. The day starts with a steady uphill on dirt tracks before following the railroad for a while, and then passes through forests on the way to the village of Santa Marina. Again you can visit the church here to get your passport stamped. After Santa Marina the path continues along forest paths until you reach Padron. The towns is famous for its peppers and from here you will be picked up in the afternoon to be taken to check-in for in Santiago de Compostela where you’ll be staying for the next 3 nights. (approx 18km/5hr).

Day 6: Thursday 15th October 2020
Today will be your last walking day, and will start from Padron where you finished up on the previous day. Your transfer will get your there at around 9am and from Santiago de Compostela Hotel to Padron. While the day starts along similar forest paths to the previous days, as you get closer to the Santiago the stage is a little less interesting and some time will be spent walking on asphalt and in urban areas. However, the excitement of coming close to the end of your journey, and the numerous facilities and bars along this part of the route, outweigh that minor negative. In the morning you will pass the village of Iria Flavia which was an important Celtic settlement. Later in the day you will pass by the baroque church in A Escravitude. On arrival in Santiago, you can make your way to the square of the Cathedral to enjoy the success of completing the Camino while your guide brings everyone’s pilgrim passports to the Pilgrim office to collect your certificates. (approx 25km/7hr).

Day 7: Friday 16th October 2020
Today you will have a full day in Santiago, The Galician capital is a city full of wonders and can be crossed from one end to the other in a leisurely stroll. And what better way to discover all it has to offer than taking a walking tour of the city. Your guide will bring the group on a 2 hour walk of the city at around 9:30am. Santiago old town has remained the same for centuries, it has a labyrinth of old, narrow cobbled streets with often arcaded covered pavements traditional of Galicia, that in 1985 was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cathedral built to honour St. James whose remains are said to have been buried on the spot is the most popular attraction but other landmarks like Park Alameda, Cathedral Museum and Abastos Market are also worth a visit. In the popular and crowded city centre streets, Calle Del Vilar, Calle Nueva and Calle Franco, you find vibrant mix of pilgrims, locals and students enjoying the many local pubs and restaurants. Galician typical cuisine can be found everywhere; the famous Galician Style Octopus, Empanadas, Padrón Peppers, Caldo Gallego and the Tarta de Santiago are just some of the region most appreciated flavors that everyone should try.

Day 8: Saturday 17th October 2020
